So, I tried to do the right thing by giving a guy a chance who has had a rough time. I made two mistakes during this process, the first was trusting the Police. The second was, I really should have used Google.
He only worked for us for two days, but it was clear that he wasn’t ready for work yet. It was only a trial anyway but still; he just came across as needing help. A little bit of a “Deer in the headlights”.
My opinion of our illustrious police force has deteriorated rapidly over the last year or so. It is not the people on the ground but the polices which are the issue. There is some secret squirrel disclosure they decided to share with us, and we even had to sign a document. However, what they “disclosed” to us was a quarter of the story and actually all public knowledge. All they had to say was Google his name. Hands up, I should have done that anyway.
However, apparently, they can’t tell me to do this. They also can’t give me advice. I was reluctant to just say no because I strongly believe that people in this position do deserve a chance to sort their life out and they just need one person to say “yes”. However, I also have a responsibility to look after my staff and clients.
The police certainly didn’t make the seriousness of the situation clear and were actually extremely unhelpful and quite frankly irresponsible. They have a duty to protect the public and should have been a lot more transparent.
Needless to say, I truly hope he gets the help he needs and manages to get his life back on track. In the meantime, this is the full story of what the Police decided to not fully disclose to us.
