Applicant Tracking Systems can scan through thousands of resumes to find just the ones that meet criteria, or ATSs can bury yours.
What Applicant Tracking Systems can't do is read between the lines.
ATSs can't assume that because you had a certain level of experience, job title, or years of experience that you meet an individual hiring manager's needs. Applicant Tracking Systems can't tell if you did your job well, if you were average, barely scraped by, or failed.
And it's not just ATSs, most human readers read your resume quickly, especially when they're making initial decisions whether to stay on your resume or move to the next. So humans aren't reading between the lines, and they aren't reading your mind.
It's your job as the job seeker to understand what an individual hiring manager needs, and give it to them. It's not the employer's job to read between the lines, assume what you've done, or read your mind.
That's why there's a saying among recruiters ... "If it's not on your resume, it doesn't exist".

You don't mean to make ATSs and humans read between the lines. You probably don't even realize that your resume is guilty of this. That's because you were taught to force your audience to read between the lines by outplacement, most career coaches and authors. This same strategy is used by certified professional resume writers, high volume "resume mills", and job board resume services who you paid to write your resume. Forcing readers to read between the lines is so common, your friends/mentors who gave you resume help probably didn't notice it either.
The good news is that anyone can solve this problem in your resume and be rewarded with more interviews, better quality interviews, better opportunities, and a faster job search.
I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including job search acceleration, getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
