Are ATSs Blocking Your Resume Or Are You Applying To Fake Jobs?

Did you realize that about 30% of all job ads are for fake jobs? There have even been recent articles claiming as much as 40% of advertised jobs are fake.

All internal and external recruiters have to post ads for fake jobs, in order to build candidate pipelines. Employers have additional advantages to run fake ads. Job boards (including LinkedIn) enjoy the extra revenue generated by fake ads.

So do you think you're getting an interview if you applied for a fake job, whether you were screened out by ATSs or not?

The real answer is ... maybe, even though it's far less likely than when you apply for ads that represent real jobs.

What you CAN count on is that you won't get a real interview when you applied to a fake job.

You might get through an ATS to get a fake interview (Compliance, comparison or courtesy) for a fake job, if your resume:

• Doesn't get blocked or mis-parsed due to formatting (Many resumes are blocked by ATSs due to formatting, including ones written by professional coaches/resume writers)
• Matches almost all criteria exactly, verbatim (common meanings/synonyms aren't counted as a match by most ATSs)
• Goes beyond job descriptions and publicly available information to address an individual hiring manager's current needs
• If you do more than your competition (no, that doesn't mean send more resumes)

If your resume has the above attributes, your resume could theoretically get through ATSs, even though the one you applied to was fake. Your likely reward would be an interview where the employer was just going through the motions, because the interview wasn't for a real job.

But if you missed any of the above steps, your resume probably won't escape from the black hole.
