Applicant tracking system is a friend, not an enemy.
Applicant Tracking system is a software to help candidate and recruitment function of an organization.
Benefits to the candidate are:
· Their resume remains searchable in company database and it will come up in recruiters search anytime recruiter is looking for a skill which is mentioned in your profile. So you can be lucky anytime.
· It depends on the demand of client and industry.
· If a company is not using ATS, they will get back to you only when you apply in actual job posting every time there is a post. Which is not practical that you will be able to attend all new job openings.
· All of your previous emails and conversation is available with recruiters to take decision faster and call you back if you fit in the budget.
· So applicant tracking system is a friend, who is working for you even in your sleep and vacation.
Limitations:
You shall have good command over English and take job search seriously. When you take it seriously, you will write your resume meticulously while making a balance in what have you done in past, doing now and can do. If you have written your strength then it shall be explained with an example. I came across many people, who undervalue the effort in writing all of their skills and role, responsibilities with an example or measurable achievements.
Their defense was, I will explain during the interview. To get an interview, you need to write and explain well. It’s simple to understand, not a rocket science. If you don’t have time, take help of professional resume writers. Take an ownership than calling ATS is enemy and sleep over it.
ATS will stay here and more Artificial Intelligence will be added.
Benefits to Recruiters:
· They don’t need to maintain excel sheets or keep resume in separate folders of resumes skill wise.
· Even if they do, it’s natural that they can miss your name. So recruiter can remain uncluttered and can find a matching candidate by a good ATS.
· Lot of ATS, provide the matching score to the Job as well so recruiters basic screening is done and they can directly call or mail relevant candidates.
· Plan and remain organized.
- TIPS for Candidates:
Every ATS don’t have the ability to produce resume score but major ATS provider have and shall have.
Assuming that ATS used by a company has this feature.
Different ATS has different mechanisms to award the score to resume.
Real scoring is based on the mix of statistical data and alternative keywords and their use.
but very few co may actually have it and mostly may be working only on a number of repetitions of must to have and desired skills keywords.
- ATS cant understands IMAGES and tables can confuse as well so AVOID, PHOTO, ICONS, TABLES.
- BE true to our self and write your main skills with examples in a measurable way.
- DONT go for fancy titles- in place of traditional, like My career history or even more fancy in place of simply "work history"
- Don't use graphics
- Dont use one resume and apply for every job opening. ( Read JD properly and use some keywords in paragraph)

7 年Hi Abhishek. Can you tell a little more about how ATS extracts the data? Are there defined parameters for extracting skill set, experience etc. Some candidates write (May'14 - Jul'17). Others may write May 2014 - Jul 2017. How does ATS calculate experience?
