Atria Finland and Suomen Lantakaasu Invest in Biogas Plant in Nurmo

Following their investment decision to build Nurmon Bioenergia's biogas plant, Suomen Lantakaasu Oy and Atria Finland Ltd. will build Finland's first industrial-scale liquefied biogas manufacturing facility in Nurmo. The decision to construct the 100 GWh renewable biofuel production facility was made by the corporations. The plant's construction will start right away, and it should be finished in 2026.

The biogas plant is planned to be constructed next to Atria's Nurmo-producing facility. Foundation and preparatory groundwork have already started. The biogas plant will use manure from farms in the South Ostrobothnia area along with agricultural and food sector leftovers to create sustainable household energy and several types of biofertilizers. After construction is finished, the facility will generate around 100 GWh of liquefied biogas using sustainable methods. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has approved investment help for the project, and it has obtained building and environmental permits.

The construction of Suomen Lantakaasu's nationwide network of production plants and its 1 terawatt-hour liquefied biogas production capacity began with the installation of the Nurmo biogas plant. It's fantastic that the Nurmo biogas plant project, which we purchased in the spring and has been in the works for a while, may now proceed. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is providing investment assistance for the project. The success of the initiative depends heavily on the role that investment aid plays, according to Leena Helminen, Director of Sustainable Business Development at Valio.

The Nurmo plant's completion will increase the supply of renewable fuel for large vehicles. Two of the first liquefied biogas (LBG) refueling stations for heavy transport have recently opened in M?nts?l? and Iittala as part of St1's creation of its own LBG refueling network.

"This year, we plan to open more liquefied biogas stations. By 2030, we want to have a nationwide network in place, and we're also working on building an LBG refueling network in Sweden and Norway." For transportation businesses and end users to invest in large transport fleets with low emissions, there must be an adequate infrastructure for fueling them. According to Matti Oksanen, Director of Gas Business at St1, "It is also crucial for developing the value chain that the legislation guarantees the incentives for biogas production and they are not continuously changed."

The biogas plant in Nurmo will open up new avenues for local farms to expand their commercial ventures and raise their profitability. The completion of this project will move Atria Finland closer to its goal of being carbon neutral, according to Tauno Per?l?, senior vice president of industrial operations.
