ATN Advocate | January 2024

Welcome from the Executive Director

Welcome to the first ATN Advocate of the year, our regular newsletter which provides you with the latest sectoral news and updates on the work being undertaken by the ATN Universities team.?

I trust you all are refreshed and raring to go after the holiday season.?

As most of you will most likely be aware, this is the last newsletter I will be sending your way as Executive Director prior to my farewell next week from ATN to take over as Chief Executive of Universities Australia in February.

Despite December and January having a reputation for being slowdown months, for our universities they have been anything but, as there was still much to do and many achievements to celebrate, as this bulletin will show.?

Our sector has been working tirelessly over the past 12 months across a range of issues and 2024 promises to be bigger still, with our eyes firmly focused on the soon-to-be-released Universities Accord. That, along with the upcoming UA Conference in Canberra will consume the thoughts of all the brightest minds across this great sector.?

I’m also pleased to announce that Frank Coletta will be Interim Executive Director on my departure and I'd like to wish him and all the ATN team across the country all the very best, particularly in a year of celebrating the 25th anniversary of ATN.?

Our first Under The Microscope of 2024 comes to you from Dr Jantina Manning, a Research Fellow from The University of South Australia working within the Centre for Cancer Biology.?

Please enjoy that story and this edition of ATN Advocate. I'll be here next week and I will be sure to be in touch with you all before my departure.?

Luke Sheehy

ATN Executive Director

Political Lens

Education Minister Jason Clare was on hand at The University of Newcastle’s December graduation event of their newest teachers.?

Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said “this evening's graduation ceremony was a true celebration of the importance and impact of teachers. As well as recognising trailblazer Dr Deirdre Heitmeyer with an Honorary Doctorate, we also welcomed Federal Minister for Education, the Hon?Jason Clare MP?to the ceremony.”

"Before the ceremony, Minister Clare met some of our graduating students and the high school teachers who had inspired them on their journey to becoming the next generation of educators. It was a touching reminder of the impact a teacher can have on their students long after they leave school.”

?Also in December – Deakin University was delighted to welcome Senator Anthony Chisholm, the Assistant Minister for Education, to open its Recycling and Clean Energy Commercialisation Hub (REACH). The REACH trailblazers were excited to showcase their inspiring projects building sovereign capabilities in hydrogen, battery storage and recycling.

A few days before the Christmas break, the South Australian Government and UniSA announced the $88m SASI sport facility was sprinting towards the finish line, already celebrating reaching the halfway mark. Professor Jon Buckley - Dean of Programs (Human Performance) at the University of South Australia - was on site with SA Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Katrine Hildyard and SASI athletes, to inspect the great progress.

Prime Minister of India, Shri?Narendra Modi, is pictured engaged in a discussion with the?Deakin University?delegation to India recently.
