Atlanta Barnwood
For our March Business Spotlight, I had the pleasure of connecting with Mike Lacy as he opined about his company, Atlanta Barnwood LLC. After a visit to his warehouse and a chat with the “Boss of Boards,” I knew I had to spotlight this unique business, in part, due to this fascinating origin story. A professional musician by trade, Mike Lacy’s foray into woodworking began in 2016 while working for a professional musical production. It was there a fellow musician gave him a tip about “underwater logging,” a lucrative industry found in the Amazonian Rainforest. Shortly after, Mike traveled to South America where he spent considerable time learning the trade of harvesting timber from underwater forests.
Extracting trees from underwater jungles in a tropical climate began to take its toll on him, so Mike started looking towards home for a welcome respite. Pairing his artistic brain with a newly found set of skills, woodworking and design became the next logical step in his professional career. After logging some time with another wood company in the metro Atlanta area, Mr. Lacy decided to strike out on his own with Atlanta Barnwood, which he founded in a business park in Marietta. Mike’s past projects include the recent Root House Museum renovation, luxurious wood paneling for dozens of homes and shops in the area, and even an occasional urban garden shed. His tagline for his business is “Boards, Beams, and Beats” which encapsulates his passions of working with wood and drumming.
After perusing his work and talking to the business owner, I’d describe his projects as timeless, inspiring, and beautiful. He sources most of his barnwood from suppliers in Tennessee and Kentucky, homes of some of the South’s oldest farming communities. Mike told me that he loves working with a variety of wood types and especially gets geared up for complex projects that stretch his creativity. Mike estimates he has completed upwards of 450 barnwood projects. A few years ago, HGTV called him to feature Atlanta Barnwood’s work, and after initially dismissing it as a suspected prank call, Mike’s company took part in the show, which greatly helped the visibility of his business. Mike told me that Marietta has been a great place to start his business, and that he is so excited to be a part of this vibrant community.

2 个月I recently completed a home office desk project using a beautiful shelf of Hackberry wood from Atlanta Barnwood. Previously, I had created a TV stand from spalted maple and loved it so much that I was inspired to start another project. I needed a desk that would fit my small living room and be suitable for home office activities. When I visited the showroom, a stunning Hackberry wood shelf immediately caught my eye. Mike was incredibly helpful once again, remembering my preference from last time to maintain the natural look and feel of the wood. The shelf was simply sanded and finished with a transparent polish, preserving its natural beauty. The choice of Hackberry wood was excellent—it’s hard enough to work on without getting scratches or impressions when writing notes. I mounted the shelf on a height-adjustable frame, allowing the desk to be used for both sitting and standing. Once again, top-notch service from the Atlanta Barnwood team. Highly recommend!
