Athletics for All – A New Beginning
Every year on May 7th, the world comes together to celebrate World Athletics Day, an annual event dedicated to promoting the sport of athletics and inspiring people of all ages to participate. Today, I found myself pondering the true essence of being an athlete as I visited the Belur Math library. There, I came across a quote by Swami Vivekananda that resonated deeply: "You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of Geeta." This powerful statement reminded me of the profound impact sports can have in our lives, transcending barriers and bringing communities closer together.
Few things can strengthen the bonds within a community quite like sports. Athletes possess an incredible power to inspire and unite, driven by mutual respect and solidarity. This year, the World Athletic Day 2023 focuses on two essential themes: inclusivity and sustainability. It is our collective desire to raise awareness among the younger generation about the essence of athletics. Observing teenagers in North Calcutta, dressed in sports attire, and carrying their equipment, heading towards various events at the crack of dawn fills me with joy. It instills a sense of hope, knowing that the youth of today are not merely confined to watching soccer leagues on mobile screens but are also actively engaging in physical activities on the green grass.
Inclusivity lies at the heart of athletics today, extending its reach from grassroots programs to elite competitions. It allows individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together, fostering a sense of unity and belonging. On the other hand, sustainability in athletics is a crucial aspect influenced by various external factors. Among these factors, reducing our carbon footprint takes precedence. With the world's climate rapidly changing, it is imperative that athletic practices embrace sustainable measures to ensure their continuity.

But is this enough to embark on a new beginning? Athletics has always garnered significant attention from governments worldwide. It bestows upon individuals the highest and most profound purpose, cultivating discipline, dedication, and perseverance. While only a fortunate few can pursue their passion as a profession, what about the rest? Should they abandon the memories of their childhood due to the pressures of work? Certainly not. If a person knows how to live a fulfilling life, they will undoubtedly find like-minded individuals or organizations that allow them to relish their authenticity. Therefore, on such special occasions, it becomes crucial to raise awareness and strengthen the bonds among like-minded groups or to encourage enthusiasts to create such groups within their own professions.
Even if you aren't a trained athlete, your involvement in event management or volunteering can still hold great value in initiating a new beginning. By fostering an athletic mindset within your organization or society, you contribute to the overall growth and development of individuals.
