Athletic Skills Translate into Business Success

We all know that athletes, whether student-athletes, amateur / Olympian, or professional, bring a variety of skills and abilities that are highly valuable in the business world.

The catch is that virtually all of those athletes who I have worked with tend to underestimate or take for granted what they do bring to the table.

Here are just a few examples:

1. Goal-setting and achievement:

Athletes understand the importance of discipline, hard work, and perseverance in reaching their objectives. Goal-setting and achieving targets are essential for success. And in this world where everything seems to have sped up in the past few years, perseverance is critical!

2. Teamwork and collaboration:

Athletes know how to build trust, respect, and accountability in their teammates and how to leverage each other’s strengths to achieve a common goal. Teamwork and collaboration are required to achieve organizational objectives. How many people do you know who seem incredibly intelligent, and yet struggle to mesh with others in their group? Athletes have this part down pat!

3. Time management and prioritization:

Athletes understand the importance of time management and prioritization to achieve their goals. Time management and prioritization is necessary to meet deadlines and achieve targets. Athletes know what it’s like to be on time for meetings, and getting things finished before the “clock runs out”!

4. Resilience and adaptability:

Athletes learn how to be resilient and adaptable to overcome challenges and adjust to new situations. They can pivot on a dime, making adjustments as the plays / races / games develop. Change is constant, and resilience is essential to navigate through difficult times. This comes naturally to athletes – it’s part of their DNA!

5. Leadership and communication:

Athletes know how to motivate and inspire their teammates to perform at their best and how to communicate effectively with different stakeholders. Leadership and communication skills are critical to inspire and engage employees and stakeholders. Athletes make very strong managers, supervisors and leaders, using the skills developed throughout their athletic careers.

Overall, athletes bring a unique set of skills and abilities that are highly valued in the business world. By leveraging their experience and expertise, athletes can make a significant impact in the organizations they work for and achieve success in their new professional careers.

ABOUT ME

Combining my passion for sports and a desire to help others succeed, I founded Win Again, where current and former athletes can discover their identity beyond sports, develop the structure needed to succeed again, and receive the tips, strategies and actionable advice that allows them to WIN AGAIN and be elite in their next great career.
