In a sport where career security hinges on health, NFL athletes have been forced to take extreme measures relying on opioids and pain medications to cope with injuries as well as to stay in game ready.?Feeling the pressure from athletes across the country for plant-based modalities, the NFL loosened testing provisions with new guidelines that allow players to consume Delta 9 THC-Carboxylic Acid during the offseason from April 20th to Aug 09th.?
Inching towards the end zone, in 2022 the NFL pledged $1 Million dollars to cannabis research.?Out of 106 proposals submitted, two teams from the University of San Diego and the University of Regina in Canada were selected by the NFL and the NFL Players Association’s Joint Pain Management Committee to investigate the effects of cannabinoids on pain management and neuroprotection from concussion in elite football players.

Changing the Coverage and Making a Play for Cannabis, Featuring Delvin Breaux Sr.
Retired NFL and CFL legend, best-selling author and thought leader Delvin Breaux Sr. is changing the coverage and making a play for cannabis.
Early in his football career,?during a kickoff return, Delvin sustained what medical professionals would consider a career-ending injury, fracturing his C4, C5, and C6 Vertebrae.?Despite the setback, Delvin Breaux Sr. would not be denied a professional football career.?With a relentless work ethic and ferocious appetite to succeed, Delvin made his dream a reality in 2013 when he was drafted to the CFL by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.?Shortly after, he took his talents to the NFL to play for the New Orleans Saints in 2015 where he made an instant impact, recovering a fumble in his first game against the Arizona Cardinals and finishing the season with 45 tackles and 3 interceptions. In an unfortunate turn of events, Delvin suffered a fractured Fibula during his first game of the 2016 season, which sidelined him for 6 games and in 2017 endured the same injury again. Despite the constant hurdles, Delvin Breaux Sr. persevered against all odds, heading back to Canada to dominate the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the BC Lions, becoming the league’s highest-paid cornerback before retiring in 2022.
Today, Delvin Breaux Sr. is using his platform to share his journey with mental health, wellness and the pivotal role cannabis played in his career.?He’s also a best-selling author and in 2020 released “Un-Breaux-Ken ” a book he’s written to inspire others to push forward regardless of any obstacles placed in front of them.

A Green Future for Professional Basketball
In the latest CBA, the NBA and the NBPA have agreed to a green inclusive future for professional basketball athletes.?In the latest proposal, the National Basketball Association will not penalize players for cannabis consumption in the new seven-year collective bargaining agreement, removing it entirely from the anti-drug testing program.??
The first domino fell in 2020 when the National Basketball Association opted to pass on Cannabis testing during the season.?With many retired and active athletes cultivating meaningful brands as well as advocating for natural plant-based modalities, the NBA has taken a huge step forward which will hopefully spark a ripple effect amongst other professional sports leagues.
