ATHENRY WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPENS
We had a visit today to the constituency by the Minister of Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy.
Minister Murphy officially opened the Athenry Waste Treatment plant.
We then visited the site of the proposed fire station in Athenry and travelled to Kilrickle for a progress update on the Kilrickle and Kilcooley water scheme project.
The Athenry Waste Treatment plant upgrade will allow for phase two of the pipe network to commence next year.
Once it is completed, it will enable many housing estates to be connected to the Municipal Sewerage Scheme.
The tender can now go ahead for the next phase of work to be done so the housing estates will be ready to be taken in charge.
This means families will no longer have to bear the cost of maintaining and upgrading the private plants that are presently in place.
Irish Water has invested €5 million to ensure that wastewater in the town is treated and discharged into the River Clarin in compliance with discharge licence and environmental regulations.
