ATEX Zone 2 Genset Package for Malaysia

Pyroban? has recently shipped a new ATEX Generator Set package to Aerodyn in Malaysia. The explosion proof Genset features an Ever Clear? long-life exhaust flame arrestor to minimise maintenance requirements for continuous use in offshore oil and gas applications. Lewis Cleary from Pyroban’s Technical Sales Team explains.

Working with our Malaysian partner AERODYN GROUP MALAYSIA , this new ATEX Generator Set is expected to be used in South East Asian waters. The ATEX Generator Set package is designed to safely power a range of different equipment in Zone 2 hazardous areas offshore, with a maximum output of 60KVA.

Based on the powerful Perkins 1104A-44TG2 diesel engine, the ATEX Genset package was designed, manufactured and assembled at the Pyroban facility in Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, UK.

The?ATEX Zone 2 diesel engine?is built for safe operation offshore in accordance with?ATEX 2014/34/EU?and all necessary standards including EN1834-1:2000. This means it cannot be the source of an ignition in the event of a hydrocarbon release offshore.

What is EN1834-1:2000?

EN 1834-1:2000 is a European Standard that sets the safety requirements for the design and construction of reciprocating internal combustion engines used in potentially explosive atmospheres. The official title is “Reciprocating internal combustion engines – Safety requirements for design and construction of engines for use in potentially explosive atmospheres – Part 1: Group II engines for use in flammable gas and vapour atmospheres.”

The explosion proof Generator Set package is designed and manufactured to be robust and reliable in harsh operating conditions and the corrosive environments found in the oil and gas industry.

Featuring an?Ever Clear? exhaust flame arrestor, operators benefit from reduced maintenance costs, increased personnel safety and reduced operational downtime when power is needed most offshore. Ever Clear is seen above on the left of this ATEX Perkins engine between the turbo and gas cooler, on the hot side of the exhaust flow.

Ever Clear reduces downtime on explosion proof engines

Ever Clear exhaust flame arrestors?replace the need for traditional “plate type” flame arrestors often found in Pyroban explosion proof engines. Ever Clear exhaust flame arrestors:

• Prevent manual handling and solvent cleaning issues associated with plate type flame arrestors on Zone 2 engines
• Allow the engine exhaust gases to pass through without clogging – no loss of performance
• Stop a flame in the event of an exhaust backfire caused by hydrocarbon gas ingestion
• Remove any concern about “dummies” wrongly used in their place

The Pyroban Genset features an Ex electric start system, Pyroban manicooler and radiator package sized for up to 45 Deg C ambient and both 50Hz and 60Hz operations. It features an?air inlet shut-off valve, air inlet flame arrestor, water-cooled turbocharger and exhaust manifold, exhaust gas heat exchanger, thermal control and treatment,?ATEX certified spark arrestor?and much more.

The package also features the Pyroban 60kVA power generation alternator seen here getting ready for shipment. The explosion proof AC alternator is Category 3G IECEx and ATEX certified and is a brushless, totally enclosed, fan-cooled, non-sparking and twin bearing AC 400v alternator with an output of 60kVA (or 80kVA). The Zone 2 Genset package was shipped to Aerodyn in Malaysia for integration with controls and the final lightweight DNV frame before heading offshore.
