Ataraxy Friday: Hard vs. Complex problems

The nature of business problems has changed dramatically. They’ve moved from hard but ‘once-and-done’ to complex and ever-evolving.

Once, to build a bridge, a team of engineers would get together, design it and hand it off to the construction crew.?

Now there is community engagement, environmental factors, complex supply chains to negotiate; and can the construction crews even get the necessary labour?

To solve problems now, we need to move from siloed technical specialists to integrated teams, leveraging each other's skills.

Take the Nobel Prize for Physics as an example of this shift:??

  • The first 15 prizes were shared among only 19 people - an average of 1.27 people per year.??
  • The most recent 15 have been awarded to 43 people at an average of 2.8 people per year.??
  • Given the prize is limited to a max of 3 in any given year, you know some collaborators on projects missed out on being named.?

If the smartest people on the planet need to collaborate and connect to solve problems, we might need to as well.

Ask yourself - are our leaders’ interactions collaborations, compilations, or competitions?

Have an Ataraxic weekend.

Nigel
