The 'Asynchronous Real Time' Cycle: Integrating Human and Artificial Intelligences

The 'Asynchronous Real Time' Cycle: Integrating Human and Artificial Intelligences

Audio Version by NotebookLM

The Service Design Hub on Tmpt.me distinguishes itself from conventional AI platforms by prioritizing human expertise. This innovative platform implements an "Asynchronous Real-Time" (ART) cycle, combining generative AI with human oversight to deliver accurate and comprehensive responses while maintaining the scalability of an AI platform.

The ART cycle, which is an implementation of AI-Mediated Communication (AI-MC) based on Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), consists of two phases: an initial asynchronous AI response followed by real-time expert intervention when necessary (see Figures 1 and 2). The process begins when a user submits a question to an AI assistant trained in an expert's knowledge base. The AI generates an initial response, which the user can then rate and, if needed, flag for expert review within the platform's interface.

Through a dedicated control panel, the expert monitors both the AI responses and user feedback, ensuring continuous learning and improvement of the AI's accuracy. When necessary, the expert can revise responses, add supplementary information, or guide the AI to generate new, more accurate answers. Ultimately, the expert remains accountable for the quality of information delivered to the user. Once the expert approves a response, it is delivered to the user and incorporated into the knowledge base, creating a feedback loop that continuously improves the system's accuracy and comprehensiveness.

As illustrated, the ART cycle's main steps are:

  1. Seeker Inquiry: The process begins when a user (the Seeker) submits a question to an AI assistant.
  2. AI Response: The AI assistant, trained on the Expert's knowledge base, generates an initial response. Seekers can rate the AI's response and, if needed, request a direct expert review within the chat interface.
  3. Expert Monitoring: Through a dedicated control panel, the Expert monitors both AI responses and Seeker feedback. This oversight ensures that the AI assistant continuously learns and improves its accuracy.
  4. Expert Review: When necessary, experts can revise or rewrite responses, add supplementary references, or prompt the AI to generate new, more accurate answers. Ultimately, the Expert remains accountable for the accuracy and comprehensiveness of all information delivered to the Seeker.
  5. Virtuous Cycle: Once the Expert is satisfied with the response, it is delivered to the Seeker and incorporated into the knowledge base, continuously improving its accuracy and comprehensiveness through a feedback loop among AI, Expert, and Seeker.

The synergy within the ART cycle results in a continuous enhancement of the AI's knowledge base and its overall effectiveness. This innovative approach has sparked a growing interest in ART solutions across various sectors. Let's explore the details of this rising trend.?

Growing Interest in ART Solutions

Currently in beta testing, the Service Design Hub on Tmpt.me has attracted over 200 members, demonstrating?a growing demand for ART solutions in the service design sector.? Tmpt.me hosts a multitude of knowledge hubs and facilitates asynchronous real-time access to industry professionals, addressing a critical market need for on-demand expert consultation. Unlike chatbots or AI systems that simulate human interaction, Tmpt.me connects users directly with qualified experts in their field with the scalability of an AI platform.

For service design professionals, this means unprecedented access to specialized knowledge and guidance. The platform enables 24/7 availability of expert insights, effectively eliminating the need for traditional, appointment-based consultations. The Service Design Hub within Tmpt.me fosters knowledge exchange and professional development among experienced practitioners and newcomers, contributing to service design practices' evolution.

Implications for the Industry

The rapid growth of the Service Design Hub on Tmpt.me reflects two significant trends in the technology sector: the movement toward solutions that augment, rather than replace, human expertise, and the adoption of innovative AI-human collaboration models like the Asynchronous Real Time (ART) cycle.

The ART cycle represents a paradigm shift in how AI and human expertise can be integrated to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions. This approach acknowledges that while AI can enhance efficiency and accessibility, human experts' nuanced understanding and creative problem-solving abilities remain invaluable. The implications of this model for the service design industry and beyond are profound:

  1. Enhanced Quality Control: The ART cycle ensures that AI-generated content is subject to expert oversight, maintaining high standards of accuracy and relevance.
  2. Scalable Expertise: By leveraging AI for initial responses and human experts for refinement, organizations can scale their knowledge-sharing capabilities without compromising on quality.
  3. Continuous Improvement: The feedback loop inherent in the ART cycle facilitates ongoing learning for both AI systems and human experts, leading to ever-improving service quality.
  4. Democratization of Expertise: The model makes specialized knowledge more accessible, allowing a wider range of professionals to benefit from expert insights.
  5. New Roles for Experts: The ART cycle creates new opportunities for subject matter experts to contribute their knowledge at scale, potentially reshaping career paths in various industries.

For organizations and individuals interested in service design and other knowledge-intensive fields, platforms implementing the ART cycle offer opportunities to:

  • Access specialized knowledge on demand
  • Participate in a growing professional community
  • Contribute to the advancement of industry practices
  • Leverage technology to facilitate human-to-human knowledge transfer
  • Explore new models of work that balance AI efficiency with human insight

As Tmpt.me and similar platforms continue to evolve, the expanding user base will likely provide valuable insights into the future of expert consultation, collaborative learning, and AI-human synergy in the digital age. The ART cycle may well become a blueprint for knowledge-sharing and problem-solving across various sectors, driving innovation and efficiency while maintaining the crucial role of human expertise.
