Madhav, a Brahmin was a minister in a king’s council. He had luxurious lifestyle but was not content with it. He started worshipping Goddess Laxmi for a boon of tremendous opulence and wealth. Despite 20years of continuous worship Goddess Laxmi did not appear. Since most of His life years had passed and he didn’t desire wealth anymore, he decided to renounce everything. He retired from his duty in King’s court and took the vow of asceticism. The very next day, a beautiful woman with a divine glow stood before him as he opened his eyes after meditation. He realized it was Goddess Laxmi, who had come to grant him a boon. He curiously questioned Her for the reason She took so long to appear. Goddess Laxmi answered that His previous life Karmic balance caused the delay. And after he accepted monkhood, the little Prarabdh which was there with him from previous life got cleansed, thus paving way for Her to appear and grant a boon. Madhav stated that he did not desire any wealth as he is a monk now. But on Goddess insistence, He asked for the boon of knowledge of the truth. Goddess granted the boon and gave him the new title of Swami Vidyaranya which meant a forest of knowledge.
