Astaxanthin - A Super Antioxidant

Astaxanthin - A Super Antioxidant

In the contemporary day and age, where people are progressively becoming aware about health, nutrition, diet, fitness; we frequently hear or read stuff regarding green tea, fresh fruits and green vegetables which are ‘#antioxidant rich’ foods.?

What exactly are #antioxidants? The human body naturally produces free radicals, harmful molecules that can damage our cells, resulting in a condition called ‘#oxidative stress’. Many factors in everyday life such as pollutants, unhealthy diet, excessive sun bathing, heavy exercise, and smoking can further increase the number of free radicals in the body, causing premature #aging and a number of disorders. Antioxidants (man-made or natural) help curb the damaging effects of these free radicals, promoting a healthy oxidative balance. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, #Astaxanthin, Beta Carotene, Coenzyme Q10 are some of the most common antioxidants.

Astaxanthin is a naturally-occurring #carotenoid (organic colour pigment) produced by the #microalgae?Haematococcus pluvialis?as a defence mechanism against harsh environmental conditions. Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful #natural antioxidants known to science with numerous #health benefits that are supported by extensive scientific #research, including human #clinical trials.?

The natural aging process is accompanied by enhanced mitochondrial dysfunction, which leads to increased free radical formation – to an extent that it can encumber our body’s antioxidant defence systems. Consequently, our body accumulates oxidative damage as we age, and we become more susceptible to a number of disorders.

2.??????#Cardiovascular Health

The cardiovascular system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste products throughout the body. Oxidative stress and inflammation lead to hardening and narrowing of the blood vessels, which gradually blocks arteries, leaving blood flow at risk.

3.??????#Muscle Endurance & Recovery

During exercise, our muscles burn calories and generate free radicals as a derivative. If the volume of free radicals exceeds the body’s antioxidant defence capacity, they can impair our muscles and reduce their contractibility.

4.??????#Skin Health

As a primary protective physical barrier between our body and its surroundings, the skin is subjected to many factors such as UV rays and pollutants that induce free radical formation. They can damage the skin cells and cause premature aging. Moreover, our skin becomes thinner and all the more vulnerable to these factors as we age, further increasing the production of free radicals.

Astaxanthin?gently neutralizes all of such harmful free radicals. Unlike other antioxidants, astaxanthin does not itself become a pro-oxidant, which can bring harm to the body. Due to its unique chemical structure, astaxanthin can neutralize many different types of radicals both at the surface and interior of the cell membrane, providing enhanced overall protection.

This article is a result of my confrontation with astaxanthin. You may have some facts to add or a different view altogether. Please share your thoughts in the comments section. I am all ears.
