?? Assisted Dying & Life Insurance: A Future Conversation?

Alright, let's have a chat about something that's been in the news a lot lately: assisted dying. It's a big decision for the UK, and I know you might be wondering how it could affect your life insurance. So, let's break it down, shall we?

Here's the lowdown:

Right now, most life insurance policies here in the UK have a clause that says they won't pay out if you die by suicide within the first year or two of starting the policy. Because assisted dying isn't legal yet, it would most likely be seen as the same thing.

But what happens if the law changes?

  • New guidelines: If assisted dying gets the green light, the government will need to make some crystal-clear rules about how it works with life insurance. Maybe they'll add some special conditions, or maybe they'll treat it just like any other reason for passing away after a certain amount of time has passed.
  • Will my premiums go up? That's a good question! It's possible that insurance companies might tweak their prices a little if assisted dying becomes more common. But to be honest, it's still up in the air.
  • Keeping it fair: Insurance companies have a responsibility to handle this sensitively and make sure their policies are fair for everyone, no matter what their personal beliefs are.

Here's what you need to keep in mind:

  • Straight talk: Insurance companies need to be open and honest with you about any changes they make to their policies. No hidden surprises!
  • Easy-to-find info: You should be able to get all the information you need about how assisted dying could affect your life insurance without having to jump through hoops.

At the end of the day:

This whole assisted dying thing raises some important questions for the insurance world. Let's keep talking about it and make sure any changes they make are done with compassion and respect.

Just a heads-up: This is just a friendly chat, not official financial advice. If you want to talk about your own situation, it's always best to have a proper chat with a financial advisor.

I'm minded to say that insurance should not be involved in this debate in any way, shape or form! It is a decision that is not to be made for any financial reason - purely health reasons. Financial reasons are always held to be the reason why it shouldn't be permitted - with good cause - and insurance companies never improve that!

Yes a sensitive area and until the Government has clarified the legal situation I suspect we will all remain in the dark Joseph K. Mayanja.
