Here's a deeper dive into Episode 2 - Top 10 things to include in a proposal

Listen to Vickey and Philip discuss their top ten things they like to see on a proposal and why it matters:

Philip's Top 10:

10. Previous Adverse "If we find out about something we’ve not been told about – it’s usually an instant decline."

9. Management CVs – esp for New Starts "CVs can make or break a proposal."

8. History of the business "If less than 5 yrs old – tell us what it was before."

7. Bank Statements "Really interested in new lending the customer may have taken on."

6. Source of Proposal "Won’t necessarily define if deal is declined or approved – but will give us more confidence, and we will ask less questions, if good provenance."

5. Group Structure Ownership Chart "If you know there is a complicated group structure – ask customer to provide this."

4. Permission to search

3. What does the business actually do "How do they make money?"

2. Business case for finance

1. Schedule of Debt "The most important for us. Absolutely critical."

Vickey's Top 10:

10. Business case "At the start of a proposal – really simple but detailed info of what the deal is."

9. Commentary on the business from the owner themselves "Brings enthusiasm that they can only get from the customer."

8. Consolidated accounts "For a business that clearly has lots of different companies, it's important to get a set of consolidated accounts to get whole umbrella of how profitable the business is."

7. Management accounts "Really good breakdown of assets and creditors and what dividends they’re taking out."

6. Full set of filed accounts "Balance sheet and profit and loss. Need to see more than is at companies house."

5. Group Structure Ownership Chart "Helps us get our head around intergroup trading, and ownership."

4. Details of Guarantors

3. What does the business actually do "If we don’t understand what they do – we can’t analyse the accounts."

2. Business case for finance

1. Schedule of Debt "We like to see:

  • Lender;
  • Original purpose of finance;
  • Amount advanced and when;
  • Current balance outstanding;
  • Any security used to support debt.

Providing a schedule of debt saves another email we don’t need to send out and delay the whole process."
