Assessments that Support Competency-Based Learning

Assessments that Support Competency-Based Learning

Although it is important to increase what children learn and know by the time they graduate from high school, there is also a need to prepare them to compete in a global economy. This means not only more in-depth learning but also more complex problem-solving abilities than ever before.

However, effective competency-based education ultimately depends on the ecosystem created by the school for such education. This includes the tools, resources, and support available for both educators and students to make the most of this approach to learning.

Of course, it is difficult to change a system that is so well ensconced in our ethos for generations. But times change and unless we prepare future generations with skills relevant for their contemporary times, we will fail to help them achieve their true potential and create a better world.

Educators can use formative assessments to measure such knowledge, gather all the necessary information regarding each student, and then adjust teaching & learning as required. These assessments support competency-based education by offering insights through the ongoing learning process. This offers room for modifications in the learning approach and focus.
