Safer lives, safer ships, cleaner seas
The assessment process for seafarer officer qualifications has now been scrutinised and improved, following upgrades to the teaching syllabus which were agreed in December 2023.?
The work has been delivered by the Cadet Training & Modernisation (CT&M) Programme, which is coordinated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).??
The next step will be to review the Training Record Book tasks, in consultation with the Merchant Navy Training Board, to align with the new syllabus.?
The ultimate aim is to meet recommendations of the Seafarer Cadet Review of 2021 and ensure the skills being taught and tested are fit for the future.??
The project has brought together key stakeholders in what is believed to be the first time a maritime regulator – the MCA – has joined forces with industry experts to update and improve cadet training.?
The complete results will be presented to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with hopes they could become a blueprint for change on an international scale.?

MCA Chief Examiner Ajit Jacob said: “The MCA is coordinating this major piece of work, but it is a true collaboration involving input and discussion from across the maritime industry including colleges, employers and the cadets themselves.?
“Ultimately, our hope is that this won’t just benefit the UK maritime industry – on which so many jobs and businesses depend – but will point the way for organisations around the world.?
“Technology and industry are always advancing, so we will continue to keep our cadet training under review. We want the UK to remain at the forefront of providing the next generation of seafarers with the right skills for professional and commercial success.”?
The seafarer cadet training review has included all modules across the Nautical, Engineering, and Electro-Technical disciplines. The new assessment process and syllabus are set to be used by nautical colleges from September 2025.

6 个月From what I've seen so far after finishing my first sea phase, the TRB review is much needed and in my view could be written / laid out better with more specific task requirements as some tasks are quite broad and even duplicated several times. Will be good to see what the outcome is and how it will affect those of us with TRB's already in progress.
