Assessing your shot

Assessing your shot

Before I tee off, I make a note of where the wind is blowing from. This pays off on reachable par threes, shots into the green or across a challenging hazard when that same wind may be blocked from where that shot is taken. If the wind is in the face but blocked by trees behind the green, it will not be felt only seen as the ball falls short of the desired target. Keep in mind, winds change direction as the hours pass. Given the opportunity, check the wind as you play your round.

When approaching an elevated tee or green, note the elevation change and whether you reached the target, landed past or short. Make a memory of which club you would hit if you had a "do over" so that next time you adjust your club selection.

Asses the lie upon arrival to the ball. Is it up hill, down hill, ball above your feet, ball below your feet or some combination there of? Each has its own effect on ball flight, stance or both. When done, make a memory of what you did right or may need to alter next time around.

What surrounds the target? Is it rolling fairway or hazards. Is there a necessary carry or a hazard beyond. Did you bring your A game or are you limping along with your C game? A Game, go for it. C Game try aiming for safety.
