Assessing the impact of Net Zero goals on fire engineering

Assessing the impact of Net Zero goals on fire engineering

Global carbon reduction targets, greater understanding of new technologies and changing consumer attitudes are all impacting the sustainability of our buildings. We all recognise the need for more environmentally friendly buildings, but what is the impact on fire safety?

As we move away from fossil fuels and introduce new building materials such as timber, these new technologies and innovations present new challenges for engineers, designers and the emergency services.

A focus on Net Zero

As an organisation, we are leading by example addressing how we can improve our practices to reduce our own impact on the environment, whether this is to continue to develop our online professional development resources, reducing the carbon impact of our energy and transport use or scrutinising our supplier relationships to better understand how we can decarbonise our procurement practices.

Our new initiative, IFE CAReS, which stands for Climate Action, Resilience and Sustainability, has been established by the IFE's Chief Executive and Chair and is built on three pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Steps IFE will take as an organisation
  • Pillar 2: Steps IFE members can take in their practice
  • Pillar 3: Steps IFE will take to become a source of technical excellence promoting fire engineering knowledge regarding sustainability including informing research as well as further developing our technical support to provide members with guidance and information around this subject.

In the coming months, more aspects of this initiative will be introduced.

Through our International General Assembly, we will be working with branches and members from around the world to capture knowledge, insights and best practice to formalise our plan and the actions we will be taking to achieve Net Zero.

Get involved

With our landscape ever evolving, we are committed to supporting our members to understand the impact on fire engineering. Building on the success of online events over the past two years, we are making as many of our CPD events accessible online to IFE members across the world. Our CPD hub includes webinars and resources across key topics including sustainability.

Join our events, participate in working groups and keep up to date with our resources, to discover what it means for you. Don’t miss out,?join today.?

There is also an inverse calculation; if the fire engineering is not carried out properly, the potential environmental impact of a fire event should be considered. A sum which I sometimes think should be applied to EVs from seeing some of the posts on here about them.
