Assessing Hope @Work
While I have been interested in the topic of workplace hope for several decades now, earlier this year I started exploring how to define and measure it.? What is hope at work??
I define it as the sincere belief in a better future.
As I examined the topic in more detail, I was surprised to find that there has been seemingly little research on the topic of workplace hope since Rick Snyder developed the Adult Hope Scale in the early 1990’s.? So, I decided to create my own assessment, stealing shamelessly from Dr. Snyder and Dr. Martin Seligman to develop the Workplace Hope Assessment.? My goal is to better understand what makes people hopeful (or hopeless) at work.
I believe hope at work involves the following 10 elements:
1)????? Anticipation (I have a lot to look forward to in my career)
2)????? Choice / Agency (I am able to choose what I work on most of the time)
3)????? Ability (I have the tools and resources to be successful)
4)????? Enthusiasm / Passion (I energetically pursue my goals and objectives)

5)????? Enjoyment (I generally like what I do)
6)????? Flow (I sometimes get so absorbed in my work that I lose track of time)
7)????? Purpose (I find meaning in the work I do)
8)????? Achievement (I am good at what I do)
9)????? Relationships (I have at least one authentic relationship at work)
10) Manager (My manager genuinely cares about my well-being)
So how hopeful are you at work?? If you follow this link you can take the assessment and find out!? Please note I do not ask for any personal information, so your results are anonymous.? At the end of the brief assessment, you will receive an aggregated hope score as well as an overview generated by HopeGPT.? You can interact with this digital AI assistant to ask questions and learn more about hope.? I am also going to record a podcast in the near future where I dig into what I have learned from the data. In the meantime, please reach out to me and let me know what thoughts and suggestions you have!
