Assertiveness Is The Key To Respectfully Expressing Your Thoughts, Setting Boundaries, And Achieving Success In Your Career

Assertiveness means expressing your thoughts, feelings, and needs clearly, confidently, and respectfully. It involves standing up for yourself, setting boundaries, and communicating effectively. Being assertive doesn't mean being aggressive, rude, or selfish; it means respecting yourself and others by being honest and direct. 


I know the power of assertiveness from personal experience. As a college graduate like you, I was shy, timid, and afraid of conflict. I thought that being nice and accommodating would make people like me and appreciate my work. Unfortunately, this belief led me to situations where people took advantage of me, ignored my opinions, and underestimated my abilities.


It wasn't until I learned to be more assertive that things started to change. I realized that being assertive didn't make me less likable or competent but rather more so. By expressing my ideas clearly and confidently, I earned respect and trust from my colleagues and supervisors. By setting boundaries and saying no when I needed to, I avoided burnout and resentment. By seeking feedback and asking for help when I needed it, I learned and grew faster than I would have on my own.


Here are some tips on how to develop assertiveness:

  1. Know your rights and responsibilities: Assertiveness starts with a clear sense of your own worth and values. You have the right to express your opinions, feelings, and needs, as long as you do it respectfully and constructively. You also have the responsibility to listen to others, consider their perspectives, and find common ground when possible.
  2. Practice active listening: To be assertive, you need to be a good listener first. Pay attention to what others say, ask questions, clarify misunderstandings, and show empathy. This will help you build rapport, understand different viewpoints, and find solutions that work for everyone.
  3. Say no respectfully: It's important to know your limits and priorities, and to say no when you need to. However, saying no doesn't mean being rude or dismissive. Use a respectful tone and explain your reasons clearly. For example, instead of saying "I can't do that," say "I appreciate the opportunity, but I'm currently working on another project that requires my full attention. Can we discuss this at a later time?" 
  4. Practice assertive body language: Your body language can convey confidence and assertiveness. Stand up straight, make eye contact, and use gestures that support your message. Avoid crossing your arms or legs, slouching, or avoiding eye contact, as these can signal defensiveness or lack of confidence. 
  5. Seek feedback and support: Developing assertiveness takes practice and feedback. Ask your colleagues or supervisors for constructive feedback on how you communicate and how you can improve. Seek support from mentors, coaches, or counselors who can help you develop your assertiveness skills.

Remember, assertiveness is not about being aggressive or dominating others. It's about being confident, respectful, and effective in your communication.
