ASPINDO 26th birthday - talk tyres

On the 8th August 2023 the Indonesian Mining Services Association [Assosiasi Jasa Pertambangan Indonesia = ASPINDO] undertook their 26th anniversary event in Jakarta. About 150 people attended the half day event that included welcome speeches, outlines of the past year’s activities along with birthday cake and nasi tumpeng.

There are personal notes. I apologize for any errors or omissions. These notes should not be used for commercial decisions.

Bambang Setiawan chairman of ASPINDO advisory board welcomed members and guests. His opening address included a commitment that ASPINDO shall continue with good collaboration with government, various associations other parties in the mining and related industries.

Frans Kesuma, Ketua Umum ASPINDO welcome of guests was followed short comment on ASPINDO’s role in the strong nickel and coal industries. During the past year ASPINDO has been lobbying government and various bodies over concerns about the biofuel industry, carbon tax along with general supportive measures towards Good Mining Practices, awards for acknowledgment of achievement along with technical seminars etc. A short slide presentation provided more detail. There are 117 companies as members of ASPINDO. Their products include edition No.7 of their book and a YouTube video advertising the presence of ASPINDO.

Prof. Irwandy Arif, special advisor to the minister of energy and mineral resources for mineral and coal governance acceleration, presented a smooth flowing prepared talk. He mentioned that coal price is returning to normal levels, though high production volumes will continue to support Indonesia’s economy, contribute to employment, tax etc. ESDM regulations continue to support the advancement of a responsible mining industry. There are significant issues on managing the implementation of IUJP (Contractor permits to the mining industry). Government and industry are encouraged to continue to work together to develop the mining industry.

Bambang Tjahjono, executive director of ASPINDO acted as moderator for Rochman Alamsjah, (director PERTAABI) presentation and discussion on Krisis Ban (Tyre) Off Road for 2023. It would seem the large off-road tyres do not have sufficiently distinctive import codes, whereupon ministry of industry treats off road tyres as the same as on road car & truck tyres. This leads to misunderstandings when developing national strategy for tyres and such. Another result of this misunderstanding is that approaching tyre importation restrictions could see dramatic decline in approvals for such large off-road tires, with the potential to bring mining to a halt as early as the end of 2023. Calls continue to attract investors to produce large off-road tyres, though this may only partially resolve the tyre supply, as there are many different specifications for tyres used to support the mining industry.

Thank you Pak Ian, for attending the 26th anniversary celebration of ASPINDO. It's true, at the moment heavy equipment owners are facing an Off The Road tire crisis. OTR tires are not yet produced in Indonesia, so we still rely on imports. Unfortunately, the OTR tires we have ordered are currently held up in the Bonded Zone due to importers lacking the necessary Import Approval (PI). ASPINDO, along with other associations in the mining sector, continues to mediate with the government. Hopefully, this OTR tire crisis will be resolved soon, and our proposed solutions will be approved by the government.
