Asking "What should I do?" is the least important question if you want to improve your health

"What should I do?"
It's an important question to ask.
In my 16+ year career helping people improve their health, it's the question that I most commonly get asked.
When it comes to someone wanting to improve their health there are three important questions that need to be answered.?
“What do I do?” is the most simple one to answer. Which might be why people get so focused on it. But unfortunately it's the least important of all three.
When we only focus on this "What" question we reduce our chances of improving compared to when we answer all three.
What are the three important questions?
The first question we need to ask is "Where do I want to go?"
This is the strategic direction we want to point in. It's assessing our current health, and then individualising a health direction based on our values and desires.
We can't answer "What" effectively before we know "Where".?
The direction informs the action. We pick the actions we will take (What) based on the outcome we want to achieve, while taking into account our starting point.
Once we have come up with "Where" we are going and "What" we need to do, we must also ask the third question.
"How do I get it done?"
The world we live in is fast paced and unpredictable. We often have multiple priorities pulling on our time, energy, and attention. This combination often gets in the way of implementing healthy action.

If we just focus on What we need to do, occasionally the stars will align and it will happen.
Often they won't.?
We also need to understand how to fit health into our world and build a toolbox of skills to help us implement healthy action.
We need to know WHERE we want to go first.
Then we need to know WHAT actions will take us there.
And finally we need to figure out HOW to do them over an over in the middle of a busy world.
If you want to make sustainable improvement with your health all three questions are vital to answer.
If you'd like some help to improve your health, and to answer these questions, next week I have an 8 week "Better Health for Busy People" coaching cohort starting.
