Asking the Right Questions

When interviewing a candidate, a manager has to do some mental digging. It’s rare to find someone who will explain their negative aspects during an interview. It’s a sales pitch for employment, after all. Managers have a responsibility to the company they represent to get to the bottom of who exactly this new person is. To accomplish this, they need to have an arsenal of tough, but revealing questions.
According to HR Morning, these are some of the best questions an employer could ask:
- What’s your favorite part of your current job?
- What’s a problem you’ve encountered and then solved?
- What’s the toughest feedback you’ve been given, and how did you learn from it?
- What are people likely to misunderstand about you?
- If you were hiring someone for this position, what would you be looking for?
As you can see, these aren’t easy questions to answer. Yet easy isn’t the goal, is it? The purpose is to see how this individual handles pressure and a strict line of questioning. If the candidates produce results you are happy with, you may just find a diamond in the rough.
