Asking the right questions

George Saunders speaking to the Syracuse University class of 2013:
‘[S]uccess is like a mountain that keeps growing ahead of you as you hike it… and there’s the very real danger that “succeeding” will take up your whole life, while the big questions go untended.’
The beauty of what George is saying is that he questions the pursuit of success if it is at the cost of not answering life’s big questions.
What are some of those big questions?
- Who am I?
- Who do I want to be? What values do I want to live by?
- What inspires me and fuels my passions?
- Am I living my life in a way I want? Where do I stand to what truly matters?
- Am I on the best path to becoming the person I truly want to be?
- Where do I want to be a year from now and how will I get there?
- What is my purpose?
- What legacy do I want to leave behind?
- Where should I say YES more? Where should I say NO more often?
George identifies that success and meaning are not mutually exclusive. It takes a clear sense of purpose, principles, and vision to make sure we are on the right path.
I encourage you to grab a journal, a pen, and head somewhere outside to dive into these.
And if I can help you process any of these questions, please reach out.
