Asking for a raise - The Dilemma!

Asking for a raise - The Dilemma!

Hello, friends! Gina London here, and today I want to delve into a conversation that resonates with professionals at every level – asking for a raise.

From junior employees to seasoned executives, I find that simply the notion of holding this conversation can fill people with a sense of dread. Do you identify with this? I’m sure you do – because the reluctance to broach this topic is deeply ingrained, and I think it’s important to explore some of the reasons why and what can happen as a result.

Imposter Syndrome:

First and foremost, many of us battle with imposter syndrome, that nagging voice in our heads questioning whether we truly deserve recognition for our accomplishments.

It's an insidious doubt that can undermine our confidence and make the prospect of asking for a raise seem overwhelming.

Know you’re not alone. I have worked with top level C-level executives to overcome this.

Recognizing our worth requires ongoing, objective acknowledgment of our contributions. Don’t wait until the end of the year to reflect. Keep a journal or some means of documenting your deeds and outcomes.

Next consider the value to the company that these deeds and outcomes represent. Maybe there is not a clear direct financial result, but an indirect contribution. This has a value too.

Understand that seeking fair compensation is not a sign of arrogance but a proper reflection of that value.

Neglecting Support Networks:

Another hurdle is the tendency to navigate this journey in isolation.

We often neglect to bounce ideas off trusted colleagues or seek support from mentors who can provide valuable insights.

But going solo can intensify anxiety and impede our ability to craft a compelling narrative for our achievements.

I think it’s crucial to lean on our support networks, drawing strength from shared experiences and diverse perspectives. Or hey, reach out to me. It’s what I do!

Procrastination and Resentment:

The act of postponing the discussion about salary or promotion can have real negative consequences.

Each day you delay allows resentment and anxiety to fester, creating an unhealthy dynamic between

you and your work environment.

“Why doesn’t my manager bring up this topic?” “Why do I have to initiate the process?” If you want more than a simple Cost of Living Adjustment, then you must be take the reins.

Procrastination not only impacts your mental well-being but can also hinder your professional growth.

You can break the cycle, seize control of your narrative, and foster an open dialogue about your value.

In tackling these challenges, I encourage you to take the time to plan accordingly.

Craft a clear narrative that articulates your contributions, understand your market value, and be prepared to make the ask confidently. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and seeking what you deserve is a critical step in your professional growth.

And to help you do just that, Guess what? I am excited to announce that on February 14, it’s not only Valentine’s Day, but I’m bringing something else I hope you will love.

I'll be sharing more insights and a framework to help you prepare and deliver a successful pay-raise discussion on LinkedIn Audio Live with Samantha Kelly.

It's an opportunity for you to engage in a dialogue about empowerment, fairness, and the courage to advocate for yourself.

Join me in this conversation, and let's work together to create a workplace culture that values and compensates employees appropriately.

I look forward to connecting with you all!
