Know that feeling when everything seems to be going along nicely and all of a sudden it’s not? I felt like I was sitting on a luxurious carpet and minding my own business, doing lots of self-development and making changes in departments of my life that are my growth areas and then …. the carpet isn’t there.
A month ago now, I fractured my big toe. Fell down the stairs after slipping on a slippery cushion lying where it shouldn’t have been, in the dark.
I wish it was captured on video. It would’ve been hilarious to watch. My lower leg bent under me and I literally skidded down the stairs on my knee. It was funny. And not so funny. Wasn’t sure if it was my knee, ankle or toe! Went to bed with some pain relief and had a very restless night. Woke at 5 to a very fat, blue toe and took myself to ED for an x-ray.
I’ve been wearing a moon boot for 4 weeks. 2 weeks to go. I’m counting the sleeps and of course, I’m so grateful that’s all that happened. LUCKY!
The hardest thing has been not being able to exercise or move my body much at all. I saw a specialist for best advice (giving it to myself is never the best in these situations) and he said, do nothing. Get a cleaner, no exercise, not even the pool, no beach, no bike, no yoga.
The best thing has been having an entire tool box for my mental health when I can’t do the one I love the most. And making those a thing BEFORE the s%*# hits the fan.
If you’ve been thinking about trying all the things you know you should and you’re able, choose one.
Move your body, to keep you healthy so when the s%*# does hot the fan you recover quickly.
Learn to meditate and if you already do enhance your practice.
Be mindful. In the MOMENT. So when you can only walk at the pace of a snail, you’ll find joy in it not despair.
Eat delicious and nutritious food from as close to nature as possible. (Doable for even the non-cooks).
Sleep, for 7- 8 hours and get up at as close to the same time as you can , everyday going to bed when you’re feeling tired.
Get a coach, counsellor, psychologist on board to help with adding ease and flow to your life (and to give you sympathy when you turn up on or offline, in a moon boot).
Practice asking for help, before you really need to so when you really need to it’s just that little bit easier.
The last one, I’m not so good at (yet). As a self-nourishment coach I do practice what I preach as often as possible and I own it when I don’t.
If you need help with nourishing yourself, let’s chat.
