Embracing Support on the Yoga Journey

Introspect & Ask for HELP

During 2014, I had severe lower back pain and emotional blockages! I am decoding, what & how I seek and use support to get out of it, with YOGA!

Little Background; Understanding the Pelvic Region

The pelvic region is a central hub of the body, crucial for stability, mobility, and overall well-being. It houses vital organs and is intricately connected to the spine, hips, and legs. Tightness in the pelvic area can result from various factors, including prolonged sitting, lack of movement, stress, or even emotional trauma. This tightness can hinder flexibility, reduce range of motion, and contribute to discomfort or pain in the lower back and hips.

Drawbacks of a Tight Pelvic Region

1. Reduced Flexibility: A tight pelvic region limits the range of motion in the hips, making it challenging to perform certain yoga poses, particularly those that require hip opening.

2. Lower Back Pain: Tension in the pelvis can lead to compensatory movements in the lower back, resulting in pain and discomfort.

3. Restricted Circulation: A closed pelvic area can impede blood flow and lymphatic circulation, leading to stiffness and a lack of vitality.

4. Emotional Blockages: The pelvis is often associated with the body's energy centers (chakras), particularly the root and sacral chakras. Tightness here can signify and contribute to emotional blockages, affecting overall emotional health.

The Role of Support and Props in Iyengar Yoga change my life...

I came to know that using props in yoga is a form of support that can significantly enhance the practice, making it more accessible and effective. Props such as blocks, bolsters, straps, and blankets provide the necessary assistance to achieve proper alignment, deepen stretches, and facilitate relaxation.

Examples of Props for Opening the Pelvic Region, I started using...

1. Yoga Blocks: Placing blocks under the hips in poses like Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) or Malasana (Garland Pose) can help elevate the pelvis, making it easier to release tension and achieve a deeper stretch.

2. Bolsters: In restorative poses like Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), a bolster under the back supports the spine and allows the pelvis to open gradually without strain.

3. Straps: Using a strap in poses like Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend) can help maintain alignment while gently encouraging the legs to open wider, facilitating pelvic release.

4. Blankets: Sitting on a folded blanket in poses like Sukhasana (Easy Pose) can elevate the hips, making it easier to maintain a neutral spine and reduce pelvic tightness.

Benefits I started deriving with even little opening of Pelvic Region

1. Enhanced Flexibility: An open pelvic region increases the range of motion in the hips, making it easier to perform a variety of yoga poses with greater ease and fluidity.

2. Improved Posture: Releasing tension in the pelvis supports better alignment and posture, reducing strain on the lower back and other areas.

3. Pain Relief: Opening the pelvis can alleviate lower back and hip pain, providing relief from discomfort caused by tightness and tension.

4. Better Circulation: Improved pelvic openness enhances blood flow and lymphatic circulation, promoting overall vitality and health.

5. Emotional Release: As the pelvis opens, it can facilitate the release of stored emotions, contributing to emotional balance and a sense of grounding and stability.
