#AskCEC the art of selling

Welcome to #AskCEC

So, there is a question that comes up A LOT, sometimes it’s a straight forward ask ‘how do I sell more?’ but most of the time it’s asked in a roundabout way, 'I want to sell more but I don't want to sell out' there is something about selling that just doesn’t sit right with many creative entrepreneurs.

Well today, we're going to explore the art of selling your product, service, or experience and discuss tips and tricks to help you master this skill while instilling confidence.?

Selling is not just about presenting a product; it's about creating connections, understanding your audience, and conveying the value of what you have to offer. Let's dive in!

·???????Know Your Audience: Understanding your target audience is crucial. Research their needs, preferences, and pain points. Tailor your?story?to address their specific challenges and show how your product, service, or experience can solve their problems. This knowledge will empower you to connect with them on a deeper level and build trust.?Now, most creatives tell me they are doing something different that doesn’t relate to a customer needs, my response nope, no, nah, stop it! You are not looking hard enough and not understanding your customer well enough, leave the biases behind, perhaps your customer likes new things, different things the point is usually you don’t know. You want to sell what you want not what they need, that can be the same thing! (First nugget of gold!)

·???????Craft a Compelling Story: Storytelling is a powerful tool in selling. Create a narrative around your offering that engages your audience emotionally. Highlight the benefits and outcomes they can expect. Whether it's a product, service, or experience, people want to envision how it will enhance their lives. Use anecdotes, testimonials, or relatable examples to paint a vivid picture.

·???????Communicate Value: Rather than solely focusing on features, emphasize the value your product, service, or experience provides. Help your audience understand how it can save time, money, or improve their well-being. Show how it solves a problem or?fulfils?a desire. Quantify the benefits whenever possible to make it more tangible and convincing.

·???????Be Authentic and Passionate: Authenticity builds trust. Believe in what you're selling and let your passion shine through. When you genuinely care about your offering, it becomes contagious. Your enthusiasm will?instil?confidence in potential customers, making them more likely to buy from you. Be honest about the limitations as well, as transparency helps establish credibility.

·???????Active Listening: Effective selling involves active listening. Pay attention to your customers' needs and concerns. Ask open-ended questions to gather insights and show genuine interest. This demonstrates that you value their input and helps you tailor your pitch accordingly. Address any objections they might have and offer solutions.

·???????Build Relationships: Sales should be about building long-term relationships, not just making a one-time transaction. Cultivate a customer-centric mindset. Offer exceptional customer service and follow-up support. Maintain open lines of communication and provide value even after the sale. Satisfied customers are more likely to become repeat buyers and refer others to your business.

·???????Confidence through Preparation: Confidence comes from being well-prepared. Thoroughly understand your product, service, or experience, including its features, benefits, and competitive advantages, yes you do have that.?Anticipate potential questions or objections and have persuasive responses ready. Practice your?story, refining it until it becomes second nature. The more prepared you are, the more confidence you will exude.

·???????Overcome Rejection: Rejection is an inevitable part of selling. Instead of being discouraged, view it as an opportunity to learn and improve.?Analyse?what went wrong, adjust your approach if needed, and keep persevering. Remember, even the most successful people face rejection. Developing resilience and maintaining a positive mindset will help you bounce back stronger.

Selling is indeed an art form that requires a combination of skills, knowledge, and confidence. By understanding your audience, crafting compelling stories, communicating value, being authentic, listening actively, building relationships, preparing diligently, and overcoming rejection, you can become a masterful salesperson. Practice these tips consistently, adapt as needed, and watch your sales soar, trust me it can happen! Happy selling!

It also pays to remember that a potential customer saying no is often about them, not us. I sent a quote to someone who placed themselves as a high end consultant, but they wanted a very budget service. I found the disparity amusing.
