Ask and You Shall...Success
Often, experience teaches us that expecting nothing saves us from disappointment. Is it good psychology? Perhaps, in its place, but as a promoter of entrepreneurial interests, you could be selling yourself short. On advising clients who are undertaking new business ventures, exhibiting diminutive expectations can produce negative probabilities.
Aim high! “Ask and you shall receive . . . .” (Matthew 7:7)! This does not mean to expect the world when you have only expressed a desire for the parking space that no one else wants. Without underestimating the volume of processes that go into creating a startup enterprise or the rejuvenation of an existing project, the practice of great expectations is a cornerstone of enormous success! Not that it will be easy or you will get everything you want. You must give a voice to that which you desire.
Below are a few tips to consider for the success of Asking and Receiving;
- Be prepared. Prepare a brief pitch about your business or project that includes an answer to your most frequently asked questions. Review and establish a rebuttal to the objections formerly raised. Having a list of the previously expressed concerns speaks to your perspicacity and shows that you identify with the interests and ideals of your potential partner, investor or client. Create a video presentation that you can easily access and share from your mobile device. Be persistent with your key concerns be well-studied with your rebuttals, envisioning your desired outcome.
- Keep your confidence in the face of rejection. Smile and be mindful of the fact that it is not all about you. It could be bad timing for the person or their company. Your ability to maintain an even keel is imperative to instill confidence in those who you are asking to trust you with their money or business. They may say no but refer you to someone who will say yes.
- Follow up with everyone. It’s imperative to follow up on every key conversation you have with a potential business partner or client. Thank them for their time and communicate gratitude for any advice or introduction they make on your behalf. Add them to your calendar for a future date to touch base and update them on your progress. This future date may reveal itself as a better time for them to support your efforts.
