Ask Pam | How can I get my leadership team off cruise control?

Ask Pam | How can I get my leadership team off cruise control?

This bi-weekly LinkedIn Newsletter will address common and not-so-common questions leaders and executives, like you, have about the culture of the C-suite.

I've been serving in executive roles, reporting to Boards, CEOs, and Executive Directors since my early 20's. I've seen and experienced quite a bit, but mostly, I've learned a lot. These experiences are what led me to executive coaching.

If you're serving in the C-Suite or are headed in that direction, I'd like to hear from you. It's not often you can find a trusted advisor to answer your most pressing questions - for free. So here I am, let's talk!

This Week's Question:

Dear Pam:

I'm concerned about my leadership team. In our organization, everyone is required to meet certain standards of performance and behavior, but it seems some people are flying just above the radar, and it is causing us to cruise in the red. They aren't giving their best, and it is critical for us to work harder now to achieve our goals for this year. What can we do midstream?

Cruise Concerns

This Week's Response:

Dear Cruise Concerns,

The short answer is to ask them what is going on. What does "flying above the radar really mean?" What are the specific behaviors, outcomes, and projections that are causing you to be concerned? What would it look like for you to believe you're cruising into the black by the end of your business year? Finally, what would it look like for them to show you that they are giving you their best?

Once you get these answers, you can determine how best to move forward. If it turns out they are not giving you their best, then now is the time to hold them accountable for doing so. Ask them what they need to finish the year strong. Hopefully, you're misreading the tea leaves and will feel relieved once you have these conversations. But your concerns signal that more check-ins are needed so you know how you're tracking against your goals.

What do others say?

Pam
