I'd argue that maintaining a personal connection with a manager is one of the strongest motivators for a worker. There are two reasons for this. First, an empathetic manager can ask for honesty regarding how everything is going. This builds trust and comfort. Next, when a worker knows they're meeting their manager often, they tend to execute their work in a manner that allows them to show it off.
