Ask The Expert: LinkedIn Ads

QUESTON: Why do I see job titles and industries within my LinkedIn Ads Demographics reporting that I am not actively targeting?

Our Senior Manager of Digital Advertising @JillGoldstein helps to answer that question below.

  • Before I get into this answer, a little bit about what the Demographics report in LinkedIn Ads is. Available at the account, campaign group, campaign and ad level in LinkedIn Campaign Manager, the Demographics section gives you insights into who is interacting with your ads.

?

  • Metrics available are based on the objective of the campaign and ad format selected. For example, campaigns with the Lead Generation objective will set metrics such as Lead Form Opens and Open Rate while campaigns using the message ad format will see data on Sends, Opens, etc.

?

  • This level of data helps you understand who is seeing and interacting with your ads, and it allows you to refine your efforts based on data. This brings us back to the initial question:?Why might you see job titles and industries within LinkedIn Demographics reporting that you are not actively targeting?

?

  • Demographics totals may not exactly match your totals from the campaign performance as some LinkedIn members who have interacted with your ads can appear in several categories as a result of their LinkedIn profile data. For example, a LinkedIn member can hold two current positions at two different companies. A user could be an Advisor at one company and an employee at another. This person would count towards both job titles and both companies within the Demographics.

?

  • As a best practice, we recommend excluding anything that looks blatantly off. However, keep in mind that today more than ever, it’s common for individuals to have more than one active position.
