Why is it important that we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Appreciation Month?

It is important that we celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders because being seen and heard validates the diasporas and contributions of Asiatic and Pacific peoples to the Unites States. To me this month means a lot because of the impact that Asian Americans have on American society. My parents, aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews have made positive impacts on the lives of many people. We contribute to a multicultural society as teachers, mailmen, doctors, nurses, homeowners, small business owners, engineers, laborers, artists, and the military. We are here. We are not additives or extras or exotic seasoning, but rather a unique weaving of the fabric of American society.

Who is an Asian/Pacific Islander leader(s) that has inspired you?

Maria Ressa, an inspiring figure whom I deeply admire, was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering efforts in safeguarding freedom and democracy. I feel a connection with Maria as we both hail from the Philippines and pursued our education in the United States. As the founder of Rappler, an influential online news website in the Philippines, she courageously returned to her native country, compelled to combat injustices, and expose corruption. Despite constant threats to her life as a journalist, Maria perseveres, facing numerous charges and arrests for her government criticism. She receives invaluable pro bono representation from renowned celebrities and prominent legal teams, embodying the resilience and determination that inspire us all.

What got you interested in travel industry?

Travel has been an integral part of my life since childhood. Thanks to my mother's dedication, we were fortunate to embark on annual vacations. As an educator, she understood the value of travel in shaping her children's education. This early exposure instilled in me a profound appreciation for exploring new places, delving into diverse cultures, savoring local cuisines, and immersing myself in traditions. One of the delightful rewards of travel is the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with fellow adventurers along the way.

What is something you love about being Asian American/Pacific Islander in the travel industry that you want to share with others?

Being Asian American in the travel industry is a source of immense joy for me because it allows me to fully embrace the incredible diversity of our world and to be an active participant in it. Regardless of our ethnic backgrounds, it is crucial to acknowledge the importance of giving back, no matter where we reside or travel. One way I personally contribute is by making conscious choices with my spending. I find fulfillment in supporting local artisans and investing in their crafts, as it directly aids in bolstering their economies. Each day, I relish the unique destinations that my feet have brought me, appreciating the richness and beauty they offer.

What advice would you give someone who is interested in joining the travel industry?

Be passionate. Love travel. Embrace your curiosity and be open to learning about different parts of the world. Travel brings people together from all over the world and this industry has plenty of roles for every skill set so find something you’re passionate about (sales, product, customer care, IT, etc.) and apply it to travel. Last, but not least, is making sure to take advantage of all your travel perks!

What is the best career advice you’ve received?

“Stay open and curious. Listen more and talk less.” “Do what you love best!”
