Asia is the key to bolstering the ANZ economic recovery

Although Australia has closed to travellers for the foreseeable future, geopolitical manoeuvres and trade tensions indicate that Australia is as connected to Asia as ever.

This was among the key messages I delivered remotely last Friday in my keynote speech to the Australian Institute of Management's conference that took place in Perth.

As Australia prepares its future economic strategy, it will need to redouble focus on all parts of Asia, especially ASEAN, Japan, India, and of course China. From hydrogen power and lithium batteries to certified foods and SaaS software, there are immense opportunities Australia has yet to fully seize in riding the next wave of Asian growth.

Trade flows are like demographics...slow to change but enormous in importance. We need more real-numbers based analysis of the economic consequences of forced changes of trade flows, aka sanctions. This is especially important as in the current neo-emotional political world where twitter-storms, manifestations, democratic values etc. induce trade flow altering measures for short term political and symbolic gains. These actions may have a high symbolic value, but I see too little awareness of the long term economic consequences they will have. Short term, disrupting trade flows have little or now cost and may look like a good idea to further a good cause, but this ignores the long term economic consequences, which are enormous and could mean a country/economy puts itself on the sidelines of growth.

If one thinks of the Global Family as a Global Body, then there is no question as to the validity nee necessity of each corporeal "region" to the healthy functioning of the overall. So while in a reclining position (Australia), the legs are not active. Yet they are needed when it's time to resume standing. This should be our inherent geopolitical understanding, which Dr. Parag Khanna exemplifies beautifully.
