Happy New Year!
Welcoming you back from the holiday break and we kick off our first edition of the 2025 newsletters with the?
New's Year Message for 2025
Looking to 2025, Africa's sports industry is on the verge of an extraordinary breakthrough. The stakes have never been higher: by 2050, one in four people on the planet will be African, and the continent will account for 85% of the world’s working-age population growth, with a median age of just 19. Africa is not just the future of sports; it is the future of the world.?
Collaborations across the continent have laid a strong foundation for the future, setting the stage for a sports ecosystem that is more resilient, inclusive, and impactful.
The key to unlocking this immense potential lies in embracing ASCI's?U-GO?model:?Understand the Game,?Grow the Game,?Own the Game. This framework is our blueprint for sustainable growth, emphasizing innovation, patient capital, human capital development, and a mindset of excellence.
Sports is far more than a game—it is a powerful engine for socio-economic transformation. As we continue this journey, our focus remains clear: maximizing sports as a unique asset class that drives wealth and job creation, fosters societal cohesion, and uplifts communities.?
The path ahead, which I have called the "Road to 5," envisions a future where sports contribute 5% of Africa's GDP. It is an ambitious target - a call to action for all of us to approach 2025 with intentionality and purpose, ensuring that the impact of sports resonates far beyond the pitch, court, or track.
Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to this mission. Together, let’s make 2025 a landmark year for Africa’s sports industry and for the continent as a whole.
The African Sports and Creative Institute (ASCI) has joined forces with the OECD Development Centre as a knowledge partner for sports industry matters in Africa. This project aims to develop data and intelligence to help public and private sector leaders better understand and harness sports as a powerful vehicle for socio-economic growth on the continent.
“Road to 5” brand name epitomizes the vision of a future Africa where sports contribute to 5% of the continent GDP.?
The?Road to 5?Project is led by the OECD Development Centre and working partner ASCI, in synergies with AFRISTAT _ and financial support from Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, aims at measuring the contribution and impact of the sports industry in Africa. The goal is to advance sustainable investments in Africa’s sports ecosystem.?

What are We Reading
This year and week we start off with our review of What We are Reading featuring books and literature on sports from different angles. This week we are at this publication's review our very own;
At its core, the book unveils a compelling narrative of empowerment, addressing the stark reality that while African athletes have enriched the global sports economy—contributing to a sector that generates 3% of global GDP—Africa’s own sports industry accounts for a mere 0.5% of its GDP. This imbalance is poised for change. With a youthful population of 1.4 billion, a growing middle class, and skyrocketing sports consumption, Africa is a continent on the cusp of a sports revolution. From grassroots leagues and talent development to esports, sports tech, and state-of-the-art infrastructure, the building blocks for success are firmly in place.
The book dives deep into the dynamics of Africa’s sports ecosystem, tackling pivotal questions: Who are the trailblazers driving change? How can Africa’s rich heritage and traditions enhance sports as entertainment? What strategies will monetize the industry and amplify its global influence? The answers paint a vision of a thriving ecosystem, positioning sports not only as an economic powerhouse but as a catalyst for societal cohesion and Africa’s global rise. This is more than a book; it’s a movement—a roadmap to a future where Africa’s sports industry becomes a cornerstone of the continent’s prosperity and influence.
For sports enthusiasts and industry leaders alike, this is the book that will “change the game” and spotlight Africa’s role in shaping the future of global sports.
You can get a copy?here?along with a preview of the book.
As seen above 2025 promises to be a busy year and we welcome your input on our weekly newsletter and any upcoming events, innovations and projects from the African sports ecosystem.
