Last week, I visited the 'Porcelain Fever' exhibition at the Princessehof Museum in Leeuwarden. I learned a thing or two about porcelain and its history, and more importantly, there is some beautiful porcelain art on display.
However, the museum also hosts other exhibitions. Visit the basement to learn more about the famous Dutch artist M.C. Escher, who was born in the former palace.
I am sure you have witnessed, if not admired, some of his art. The meticulous drawings are well known. Especially the impossible situations that keep fascinating millions.
In the basement, one room has its walls painted, inspired by Escher's painting 'Convex and Concave' (in Dutch 'Hol en bol'). It feels like you are part of a Mediterranean village, albeit one where gravity tricks you.
Looking around, I wondered why his art fascinated me so much. For sure, it is about impossible art. But to me, much of his art also reflects the challenges in life. So much applies to many situations. Life can be pretty (im)possible sometimes.
These days, many youngsters might think that decent planning and discipline will guarantee particular success. Sure, planning and discipline can get you far. But leave it up to life to throw in some surprises. Life will test you; you might encounter challenges, and some work-related situations might feel like ongoing, never-ending battles; compare it to Escher's 'Ascending and Descending'.

In his work 'Day and Night,' you will witness infinity and eternity. Dark and light keep each other in balance. This same balance might be noticeable in your life and work.
But you may need to climb some stairs. Sometimes, you will feel upside down as life seems to defy the rules of gravity. But after some time, you will see patterns and understand some rules in life and work.
So, don't get the impression that your career is like those 'life hack' videos on TikTok: success within 30 seconds. Setting up a network, developing your career, making a name, and establishing your brand takes time, dedication, and energy.
(If you succeed within 30 seconds, I will be happy for you.)
But once you get there, you will be amazed. Take some time, and enjoy all the life- and work experience you have gathered. Like Escher's Metamorphosis, you have grown and evolved as a professional but, above all, as a person.
(The exhibition 'Porcelain Fever' in Leeuwarden is worth a visit. If you like Escher and his work, visit the museum 'Escher in the palace' in The Hague. Highly recommended!)
