ASC, Bamboo Sushi Highlight Blue Ocean Mariculture Hawaiian Kanpachi

Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) held a get-together at Bamboo Sushi NW in Portland, Oregon, to promote sustainably farmed seafood this month, and I was one of many fortunate leaders in the industry to be a guest. The culinary team exceeded expectations and it is always such an honor to see the talent and creativity involved especially when the spotlight shines on our Hawaiian Kanpachi.

“Sea Green. Be Green,” is an April promotion in honor of Earth Month. We were thrilled to partner with Bamboo Sushi , who took the opportunity to launch a new Blue Ocean Mariculture Hawaiian Kanpachi dish complemented?by mango, black plum, lime, Aleppo pepper, ponzu, and hibiscus jam. Believe me, it tasted as good as it sounds!

Aquaculture continues to be a growing part of the seafood industry within the United States, so it is refreshing to see that restaurants like Bamboo Sushi are using their notoriety to spark change and shift the perceptions of aquaculture seafood. It is encouraging see that more people are embracing aquaculture and that the industry is directly addressing the misconceptions around it.

I’ve worked in the seafood world for over 37 years and have seen the shift within the industry; a necessary evolution. Over half of seafood consumed in the United States is raised through aquaculture, yet only a small percentage of that seafood is grown here with the rest imported. If you told me at the beginning of my career that aquaculture would be evolving fast enough to be the solution to how we feed a growing population, I wouldn’t have believed you. Now, to be part of the solution by leading the only open-ocean finfish farm in the U.S. and providing a premium quality fish to the consumer, I find myself beyond a proud of what I do and the people I work with since they are the ones that truly make it happen.

Because of organizations like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) , consumers can not only be confident that their seafood is grown in a responsible way but can identify it quickly by looking for the logo. Here’s to a bright future!

Well said, Dick! Thank you for joining ASC and for being a part of that solution toward a more sustainable food supply. Not to mention the Bamboo Sushi's Hawaiian Kanpachi dishes were beyond delicious!
