  1. During the Vietnam War, Admiral Zumwalt's eldest son (Elmo the III) served as a Navy lieutenant on a patrol boat. On August 13, 1988, the admiral's son lost his battle with a cancer related to Agent Orange exposure.
  2. On July 2, 2000, Admiral Zumwalt died at the Duke University Medical Center. His cause of death was malignant pleural mesothelioma.
