During 2021/22 in the United Kingdom, there were:

  • 13,974 hospital episodes where one of the recorded diagnoses was Pneumoconiosis due to asbestos and other mineral fibres.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF AIR TESTING?

The HSE has published a research report (RR1191) on Fluorescence Microscopy to Measure Asbestos in Air and Lung Samples.

Currently, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires duty holders to prevent or control exposure to asbestos, and to carry out monitoring of airborne fibres using the approved method, Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).

However, this method does not discriminate between asbestos and non-asbestos fibres. The report evaluates an alternative method, Fluorescence Microscopy, which allows for easier identification and discrimination of treated asbestos fibres but concludes that it is not suitable for use by duty holders or for HSE research.

The report emphasizes the importance of accurate measurement of asbestos fibres in air and lung samples for research purposes and highlights the increasing need to discriminate between specific asbestos fibre types and measure very low concentrations.

Global Asbestos Awareness Week 2023

Organized by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), Global Asbestos Awareness Week is held annually at the beginning of April to raise awareness through sharing stories and seek better prevention.

This year’s week was labelled ‘One Word, One Week, One World’ and has four key focus areas:

  • Banning the mining, manufacturing, and use of all asbestos fibres around the world
  • Preventing asbestos exposure
  • Increasing compliance and enforcement of existing laws and regulations
  • Strengthening international partnerships to protect public health

During Global Asbestos Awareness Week (1-7 April 2023), the Health and Safety Executive?(??????) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) aimed to inform people that asbestos is present in millions of buildings worldwide and, when not managed properly, poses a severe threat to people’s health.

If you're working in an industry where you might be exposed to asbestos, make sure to follow the guidelines provided by the HSE and IOSH. Take precautions to minimize your risk of exposure, such as wearing protective gear and following proper safety protocols.

According to the most recent?HSE statistics, Mesothelioma cases in women are increasing. While men still make up the majority of Mesothelioma cases, cases among women increased by 93% between 1993 and 2022, compared to just 47% for men.

Traditionally, Mesothelioma was considered a male-dominated disease, but more and more women are now being diagnosed with the condition.

Women today are more likely to be exposed to asbestos indirectly, through household or?environmental exposure both?in the workplace and at home. This is due to a different workforce dynamic and a more even spread in typically "Male-dominated" jobs.
