ARUP and Access Anvil Corp. published in Fabricate 2020
From computational design, to material performance and manipulation, to robotic fabrication, FABRICATE promotes the full spectrum of research and creative practice currently occurring within Architecture and Engineering. FABRICATE 2020 released a call for work requesting submissions of built or partially built projects by individuals or collaborators in academia, practice and industry and selected 32 projects for the Fabricate 2020 publication.
Having recently completed our scope of work on the Little Island Project, a public park that provides one-of-a-kind relationship between nature and art, at Pier 55 in NYC, ARUP, an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today's built environment asked our team at The Fort Miller Group to co-author an article emphasizing the implementation of Digital Fabrication within a production sequence. The team at ARUP included Yong-Wook Jo, an Associate Structural Engineer, David Farnsworth, a Principal Structural Engineer, and Jacob Wiest, a Senior Structural Engineer.
Our team at The Fort Miller Group decided to participate since we accepted the challenge of fabricating such a unique and complex series of precast concrete architectural elements. The project combined and integrated all of our resources within our organization and challenged our traditional process of producing precast concrete utilizing digital fabrication tools. The project was rewarding as it created innovative opportunities for our organization to continuously improve and combined the resources within our organization to create something truly amazing for many years of enjoyment.
If you have an interest in Architecture and Engineering or want to learn more about digital fabrication in a manufacturing setting, I encourage you to download this publication for free at https://www.uclpress.co.uk/products/154646. Our article is titled "LITTLE ISLAND: SCULPTURAL STRUCTURE THROUGH DIGITAL DESIGN AND FABRICATION" and located on pages 149-151 in the PDF. There are many projects included in this publication that will stimulate your mind and push back on the traditional construct of the built environment.
