In the mid 1920s, not long after her graduation from the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Bothwell's imagery showed the mark of contemporary Modernism, though her earliest style was rooted in Impressionism. Flat, Cubist-inspired planes and blocky urban scenes began to emerge where formerly she focused on figurative and landscape imagery.

In "The Mill, Port Gamble," we can witness a period of experimentation in which she began to use the width of the oil pastel to produce works with thick, jagged lines and saturated earth tones, capturing the sensory experience of the industrial environment. In the coming years she will have moved almost entirely into non-objective Abstraction.

The Puget Mill Company's Port Gamble sawmill in Port Gamble, Washington was the longest running mill in the U.S. by the time it closed its doors in 1995. When Dorr Bothwell drew this image mill and its surroundings, it was almost exactly at the midpoint of its entire operation and was in its heyday, bringing prosperity to 250 sawmill employees and their families in the damp Pacific Northwest. Today, it is a tourist destination whose historic buildings and houses were restored to their original New England style in 1996.
