A unique and beautiful slice of the west coast's natural habitat, it is one of the last natural Coho salmon runs in a county that was once a destination for fishing, known for the clear waters that ran through the thick, protective shadows of redwood groves. It is currently under threat from overzealous logging and development, as well as - more recently - wildfire, including the September, 2020, Walbridge Fire.
Here, Rice captures the essence of the northern California countryside, the quietude of a summer's afternoon in one of the most stunning landscapes in the United States. Sunlight filters through redwood branches just ahead, creating a luminescent veil of bright green. Layered shadows in the foreground crisscross the meandering creek bed, exposed during the dry heat of late summer. Later in the day, ocean fog will tumble down the hillsides and settle onto the forest floor, creating a safe haven for the plants and animals endemic to the region.
In August of 1900, a job offer from his colleague and friend, Frederick H. Meyer, brought Rice to California. At the age of twenty-seven, he became Assistant Art Supervisor in the Stockton Public Schools. In 1910, Rice moved to the East Bay, living first in Alameda before settling in Oakland in 1915. He taught for thirty years in the Alameda and Oakland public schools, and periodically taught classes for the University of California Extension and the California College of Arts and Crafts. While teaching, Rice was also taking classes at the California College of Arts and Crafts and earned his BFA in 1929.
Rice began his career in watercolor and produced an amazing body of watercolors capturing the pristine beauty and varied landscapes of California and the southwest. His watercolors from his first fifteen years in California place him in Cazadero, Healdsburg, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Capistrano, Leona and Niles Canyons, Pacific Grove, Moss Beach, the Russian River, Stockton, French Camp, Laguna Beach, Yosemite, Tamalpais, Shasta, and Lake Tahoe.
