Igor Mitoraj, Sonno Grande, 2004, ed. 1 of 8, bronze, 99 x 107 x 84 cm?
Igor Mitoraj's sculpture, presented by Cortesi Gallery, is deeply rooted in the classical tradition. Greece and Italy primarily inspired the sculptor for his marble and use of bronze and Egypt for its monumentality. Busts and human heads recall classical heroes and gods, which are brought back to a new contemporary dimension and move away from the idea of perfection. Almost none of his statues are complete, a constant allusion to the concept of "find", to the fragmentary way in which the works of the Greco-Roman era have come down to us and the fragility of human existence.
