ARTIST MENTOR SPOTLIGHT | GEORGIA GENDALL

We are delighted to introduce the naturally fabulous Georgia Gendall.

Georgia’s practice ranges from ludicrously impractical human-powered contraptions and snappy ‘epic fail’ videos to cyclical sculptures, enduring sound works, and public events. Her wry eye and attention to life’s smaller details underpins her work and she adapts found objects to redirect, interject, mimic and rethink how we interact with everyday places, people, and local ecologies. Her commitment to consistently undermining purpose attempts to operate as a respite from the highly functional global landscape and celebrates what happens when we inevitably fall short.

Georgia Gendall (b.1991) is an artist living and working in Cornwall. She is a studio holder at CAST. Recent shows/events include: Thanks for the Apples, Falmouth Art Gallery, (2021), Penryn Worm Charming Championships, Penryn, (2021), Gathering, Grays Wharf, and Haalem Arts Space, (2021), Nobody Said it Was Easy, From the Field, (2020), Allantide, G39 Cardiff, (2020),?When Was the Last Time you Lay Down to Look at the Sky?, Whitegold, St Austell, (2020), Potion Room, Subsidiary Project, London, (2020), In Other Words, Darling, Kestle Barton, and Auction House, (2019), also also also, Whitstable Biennale, Whitstable, (2018).

What are you currently working on?

I am working on a collaboration between herds of cows and myself; collecting their half-licked Himalayan salt blocks that they lick into traditional sculptures for an upcoming show. Also doing a lot of oil pastel drawings of udders and sunrises.

What rituals do you have in the studio?

Desperately trying to stay away from the laptop for as long as possible.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to fuel the tank?

Master chef, cheap thriller books, and radio garden - an app that allows you to listen to any radio station worldwide.

What helpful resources or advice would you recommend or offer to artists?

Make your point but don’t complain.

Which guests would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Probably Julia Davis and Miranda July and then I would have to leave because it would be too overwhelming.

What new skill/s would you like to learn?

I would like to build on my joinery skills. I fantasise about one day not doing a bodge job.
