Artist Interview with Thunder Rockets
Thunder Rockets represents the work of Brazil based illustrator Matt Christovam. His striking style is fresh, full to the brim with vibrant colours and charismatic characters. This distinctively playful approach has already landed Thunder Rockets an impressive client list including Google, Sony Music, Telegram, Adobe Brazil and UI Lab.
1. What's the first piece of art that you remember having an impact on you?
I remember visiting a museum as a child and seeing the works of an exponent painter of Brazilian modernism, Tarsila do Amaral. The colors, the fluid forms, the acid themes - it was impossible not to admire her and have her as a reference! It was there where I fell in love with the art and the power of communication it has.
2. What would be your dream project to work on?
I love working with brands that have the same principles of inclusion, diversity and innovation that Thunder has, so it would be awesome to serve projects with Netflix, Disney, Nike and many others.
3. What is your workspace like?
I often say that I am very organized in my own mess. I'm always surrounded by books, gadgets, colored papers and various pens. I like to have things that inspire me at hand.
4. If you hadn't been an illustrator what would you be?
I worked for many years as a graphic designer so I think that if I didn't work as an illustrator, I would definitely work with creativity and advertising... maybe cinema.
5. What's the best piece of advice that you've ever been given?
‘Each dream you leave behind is a part of your future that no longer exists.’ Steve Jobs said that phrase and I have carried it with me ever since.
6. How did you develop your distinctive style?
The first step to having a striking style is to simply be ourselves. So I went on a journey to find myself. I too, draw inspiration from great artists, designers and pop culture. I draw every day and experiment with new tools, color palettes and possibilities to help expand and develop my artwork.
?7. Do you prefer creative freedom and a loose brief, or do you prefer boundaries and a clear brief?
I love the freedom to create a piece by my own rules, but a clear and straightforward brief can be a great guide to my creativity.
8. Who has inspired and influenced you?
I love art. It would be unfair to define some artists only, but I will try. Tarsila do Amaral, Paul Klee, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, Basquiat... From the contemporaries, Brosmind, Kaws, Takashi Murakami…
9. How do you relax when you're not drawing?
Consuming art is my biggest life passion. So I go to museums, watch a lot of movies, listen to a lot of music and also I love to cook!
