ARTIST INTERVIEW with Joas Nebe on Florence Contemporary Gallery’s Instagram side as part of the publication ?55 Artist To Discover In 2024“ out now
?Q: Is there a particular reason why you decided to use painting as a medium of expression?
A: That's an interesting question! For me, painting has always been associated with expressive gesture—the arm moving within the radius it can reach, or the hand painting the fine line or brushstroke. In this sense, painting is perhaps, in the context of art brut—if we need to make an art-historical classification, and sometimes that is helpful, I understand—a "body art," a mark of the moment of human existence at the time the image is created, regardless of its size. For this reason alone, painting, gouache, etc., still hold value for me, because they distinguish us, among other things, from the products of AI, which can imitate our physicality, the brushstroke, the drawing line, but only ever as a copy. AI lacks the physicality of humans or animals.“
